Autumn in Northern Norway (late August to late October) is unpredictable. Temperatures can swing from above 20°C to below freezing within the same week. It can be completely still, or blowing hard with driving rain and sleet. Windproof and waterproof clothing protects you when the weather turns rough, and if it’s cold as well, an insulating layer underneath will keep you warm.
Weather to pack for
| Temperature | 3–11°C on average, dropping towards 0°C late in the season |
| Precipitation | October is the wettest month (approx. 137 mm). Be prepared for rain for much of the season |
| Wind | Can be strong and changeable, especially along the coast |
| Daylight | Days shorten quickly, from light evenings in August to properly dark evenings in October |
Clothing – layering is key
- Windproof and waterproof jacket and trousers (not just “water-resistant” – strong coastal winds require proper windproofing)
- Wool base layers – thin for hiking, thicker for stationary activities like aurora hunting
- Fleece or wool sweater as a mid layer
- Waterproof shoes or boots with good grip. Rocks and trails get slippery in the rain
- Warm socks (preferably wool, which still insulates somewhat when wet)
- Scarf, hat and gloves – especially for evening activities in October

- Headlamp – useful as daylight fades quickly through the season
- Thermos for hot drinks on the trail
- Dry bag or pack liner for camera and phone
- Power bank (doesn’t need to be large) to keep your phone and headlamp charged
- A spare set of dry clothes (and ideally shoes)
Other gear worth bringing
Autumn overlaps with the start of the northern lights season. If you plan to photograph the aurora, bring at least an extra warm layer and a tripod for your camera or phone.
